WHO’S IN CHARGE??????

Times have changed that is for sure and they will continue to change that is also for sure. But one thing I feel is certain to have success and that is there has to be one leader who is willing to take charge. Now this leader doesn’t have to make all the decisions but they have to be accountable for all decisions that are made. Not pass the buck as I often see coaches in particular do. As a coach at the end of the day the buck stops with you – that is the cold hard truth.

WHEN DO FANS CROSS THE LINE

It is interesting that over my career I have encountered some very interesting fan behaviour. Having played and coached in a variety of countries I have been abused, had things thrown at me and but have been fortunate to not have a physical confrontation with a fan. It is likely we are all aware of the situation in Detroit during an NBA game where players entered the crowd during an altercation. The question I ask who crossed the line?

Stadium Southland will be full of scenes of hysteria and hype tonight for the Sharks’ first game in NBL history, but coach Richard Dickel is adamant his side won’t be overawed by the occasion.

The Sharks are expected to have a large crowd in attendance and, with many of the younger players in the Southland squad not having played in the NBL before, tonight’s match could be a shock to the system for some.

Hawks win mental battle first

ANENDRA SINGH | 15th March 2010

It's called a mental meltdown.

That is, sports people looking across the floor with an inferiority complex with such intent that they forget what they are essentially there for - to play a game.

0800 Easy LPG Hawks head coach Shawn Dennis wanted his troops to overcome that hurdle on Saturday night against the Manawatu Jets and they didn't disappoint him after a rollicking 118-76 in Palmerston North.

Saints' centre is back 'enjoying having fun'

By SAM WORTHINGTON - The Dominion Post Last updated

Calling time out on his basketball career might turn out to be the best decision Nick Horvath ever made.

The Wellington Saints centre was burnt out last year after spending the majority of his 20s playing in both the New Zealand and Australian leagues while also representing the Tall Blacks.

Mentally and physically exhausted, a newly married Horvath disappeared from the basketball scene in 2009, travelling his homeland America with his wife, former Black Stick Sheree.

Guards help Hawks swoop on win

ANENDRA SINGH | 8th March 2010

In basketball, the point guard assumes that mantle of responsibility.

With import Josh Pace not arriving in Hawke's Bay until the end of this month following his American stint and Jarrod Kenny recovering from injury, someone has to fill the sensible shoes of a specialist point guard in the 0800 Easy LPG Hawks basketball team.

NZ Coaching Future Very Bright

It is with great interest that I am starting to see players from the successful 2002 World Championship campaign starting wind down their careers. A number of them are choosing to move into the world of coaching. This surely can only bode well for the future of basketball in New Zealand.

AND WE ARE OFF!!

Well the season is under way and there we no real surprises from a win/loss point of view but certainly the start of the season unearthed some exciting players to watch this year. In one of the finest debuts in my time in the NZNBL Waikato import Eric Devondorf started with an exemplary scoring effort of 49 points to help the Pistons route Nelson on opening night of our new season. Nelson were certainly at a disadvantage not having a number of players at training as they finished their commitments in the ANBL.

Hawks in OT

March 6, 2010

Southland Sharks impress in debut but Hawks show experience winning 105-90 in overtime.

Hawks had six players reach double figures led by Everard Bartlett who scored 23 points and Jamil Terrell who had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks. For the Sharks newly signed import point guard Mike Rose had a game high 29.

Start of the first quarter was close but with the scores at 12-13 Hawks increased their lead with a 15-3 run, up 28-15.
