The Hawke’s Bay Hawks are thrilled to announce the return of Sam Gruggen as Head Coach for the 2025 Sal’s National Basketball League (NBL) season. After a standout season in 2024, Gruggen’s leadership will once again guide the Hawks as they strive for excellence both on and off the court.
Gruggen joined the Hawks last season, bringing a wealth of basketball expertise and a passion for developing young talent. Under his guidance, the team fostered a positive culture, showcased strong performances on the court, and demonstrated the resilience that defines Hawks basketball.
Hawks General Manager Jarrod Kenny expressed his excitement about Gruggen’s return: “We’re excited to have Sam back for NBL 2025. He did an exceptional job last season creating a positive culture and developing our local talent. Sam’s return brings continuity back to the group and will allow us to continue building on last season”.
Gruggen will make his way to Hawke’s Bay at the conclusion of the Illawarra Hawks’ season in the Australian NBL, where he currently serves as an assistant coach. The Illawarra Hawks are enjoying a dominant campaign and are sitting in first position as they push for a championship.
Gruggen shared his thoughts on returning to the Hawks: “It’s an honour to continue with the Hawke’s Bay Hawks. Last season was a great start, and I’m looking forward to building on what we’ve achieved, connecting with the community, and making this season one to remember.”
As the Hawks gear up for the 2025 season, Gruggen’s continued leadership is expected to build on the team’s solid foundation, driving further growth for the players and creating thrilling moments for fans at Rodney Green Arenas.
“Sam’s return is a milestone for the Hawks. Creating continuity at the lead coach level and the opportunity to grow on the foundation set last season, it’s a great position to be in as we head into the 2026 season”, says Hawks Chair Sally Crown.
