BALDWIN STEPS DOWN AS 2015 HEAD COACH

BALDWIN STEPS DOWN AS 2015 HEAD COACH

IMS Payroll Hawks today announced its 2013-14 coach Tab Baldwin will not return for next season’s National Basketball League.

Hawks chairman David Aflallo said the two parties had failed to agree to terms in renewing the contract and the franchise will immediately advertise for a new head coach.

“We haven’t been able to come to an agreement that suits both us and Tab.

“This is a mutual decision and Tab goes with our blessing. He’s leaving the team in a better position than when he arrived. It’s unfortunate for us but we are excited about this coming season.

Baldwin said he remains an avid supporter of the Hawks. He has played an integral role in the development of many of the players and he is keen to watch their ongoing success.

“Although leaving the Hawks is a difficult decision, I have nothing but fond memories from the past two years.

“The 2014 season was a great recovery from a tough 2013 campaign and it was characterised by the teamwork of the entire organisation.

“From the outstanding group of Board members to our great general manager, Tanya Dearns and her predecessor, Paul Trass, to a tremendous team and support staff, I was blessed to work alongside all of you.

“I want to thank the many sponsors, especially Kevin Atkinson, who supported the team and was so instrumental in me coming to the Bay.  Most importantly, I want to say that regardless of where I coach now, the Bay is my home and the Hawks is my home team.  I will stay a strong supporter of the organisation and players in any way that I am able.”

“I look forward to the team taking the next step up and winning the NBL,” Baldwin said.

IMS Payroll Hawks sponsor Kevin Atkinson said he was disappointed to see Tab go, as they also had a long-standing friendship.

“Tab is one of New Zealand’s greatest coaches, so it’s sad to see him go, but the team and management are in a pretty strong position and I’m sure there will be no shortage of interest from top coaches keen to move to Hawke’s Bay.”

Hawks general manager Tanya Dearns said the head coach role will be advertised immediately, with an appointment made as soon as possible.

“We get approached all the time by coaches keen to move to Hawke’s Bay and coach the Hawks, so I know we’ll get plenty of interest in the role.

“Tab has been fantastic for us, he is well respected by the players and has had strong relationships with our sponsors. I’ve also enjoyed working with him this season and wish him all the best” Dearns said.

HAWKS BARTLETT AND KENNY NAMED IN TALL BLACKS TOURING TEAM

HAWKS BARTLETT AND KENNY NAMED IN TALL BLACKS TOURING TEAM

Tall Blacks marked another milestone on the road to Spain and the FIBA Basketball World Cup in late August with the trimming of the roster down to a party of 14 to travel through Asia and Europe on their way to Spain, each player hoping they will then make the final cut of 12 for the World Cup itself.

Head coach Nenad Vucinic and assistants Paul Henare and Pero Cameron have reduced the squad before heading first to Korea for a further two games against the South Koreans, then to a tournament in China and then on to Europe with games in Lithuania and Serbia before arriving in Spain in late August.

Of the 17 from the Burger King Series, four will not board the plane to Korea in a week’s time, one as a result of injury. Jack Salt, Tohi Smith-Milner and Josh Bloxham received the news no coach likes to deliver, let alone the players want to hear.

“With young guys like Josh, Tohi and Jack they have a great future ahead of them,” said Vucinic. “Josh is not as young as the others but in point guard terms he is young. All three have great futures with the Tall Blacks and their time will come, although it is very difficult for them at this point with this news.”

Vucinic spared a thought as well for Alex Pledger, the Breakers centre will not travel with news that his injured foot may take 4 to 6 weeks to heal.

“The toughest decision is the one that is made for us with Alex and his injury because he was one of the main players we were counting on. We still don’t discount him because we will give him time to recover but it will be a race against time for Alex. We really feel for him, he has worked so hard after surgery on his ankle and now this, it is such an unusual injury too, it really was bad luck the way he came down on someone else’s foot.”

Influenced in part by the injury to Pledger, the Tall Blacks will take both Casey Frank and Nick Horvath on tour, despite knowing that ultimately only one of the naturalized players can make the final 12 in Spain.

“It is a very tough decision, we could not make it yet and decided to take both of them to give us more time and see how the combinations go, all the more so now with Alex not travelling. It is a crucial decision as both of them are also carrying niggling injuries but at this time we have looked at what is best for the team and that means experience, it is not a time for developing players, so for now they will both travel and we will make a decision closer to Spain.”

The 14 include veteran Tall Black players with previous World Cup experience, including Kirk Penney (2002, 06, 10), Mika Vukona (2006, 10), Tom Abercrombie (2010), BJ Anthony (2010), Lindsay Tait (2010) and Casey Frank (2010).

There is a strong showing from the younger brigade as well though, most notably in the large form of 16 year old Tai Wynyard who continues his stellar rise in the sport. The Breakers Academy player was named MVP at the recent Nike All Asia Camp and has shown few nerves in becoming the youngest ever Tall Black in the just completed Burger King Series.

Captain Mika Vukona is excited about the team’s prospects for Spain and beyond.

“I am excited, really excited. I have said it before but it is worth repeating that the quality of the young players coming through is fantastic and paints a bright future for the Tall Blacks. But this is no accident, Nenad and the coaching staff of the Tall Blacks have been working with a number of these players for the past four or five years, bringing them into camps and monitoring their progress and many of them have been working on their games at the Breakers Academy so we know how good they are. The key now is to find that chemistry in the group.”

Vucinic stressed that none of the players left out at this point should consider themselves right out of the frame.

“Until we name our 12 for Spain in late August, everyone has to consider themselves a chance and we have asked them to maintain their fitness and their focus should they be called upon. As we have already seen in this past week, injuries can occur at any time.”

Rob Loe will join the team in New Zealand just prior to departing for Korea while Jarrod Kenny is named despite currently carrying a foot injury. The Hawkes Bay point guard is expected to recover in time to play a part in the Asian leg of the tour.

14 player squad to travel to Korea, China, Lithuania and Serbia en-route to Spain.

IMS PAYROLL HAWKS EDGE SHARKS IN OT

IMS PAYROLL HAWKS EDGE SHARKS IN OT

Sunday was a day of overtimes, as the IMS Payroll Hawks edge the Zerofees Sharks 94-89 in extra time.

Earlier today the Canterbury Rams had their first road win of the season in an overtime thriller against the Advice First Pistons.

Tonight, shooting guard Everard Barlett scored a season high 29, leading the Hawks to a victory that looked unlikely when they trailed by 13 points in the early stages of the fourth quarter.

A three from Darryl Jones gave the Hawks a 76-75 lead with under three minutes to go, and when Bartlett made two free throws with 13 seconds to go, the Sharks needed a three to tie the game.

Most people would have thought it would be Kevin Braswell who would take the three, but it was his back court partner Luke Martin who made the clutch three to send the game into overtime.

Martin scored a team high 25 points, and also made a three point play in the overtime to give the Sharks a 85-83 lead with 3:17 remaining.

But Martin would foul out a couple of minutes later, and the Hawks would re-take the lead scoring the next three points off free throws.

Braswell would score in the following possession to level the scores, but after that it would be all Hawks, as they scored the next six points to seal the win.

Jarrod Kenny had an impressive game of 21 points, six steals and five assists for the Hawks, who shot 42% from the three point line.

Brian Conklin and Braswell each scored 20, and after being limited to 13 minutes the night before, forward Tai Wesley added 18 points and 10 rebounds in 40 plus minutes.

Southland have now lost three straight on the road and are in a log jam with the Saints, Giants and Pistons with only one game separating second to fifth.

The Sharks will play their next game at home to the Rams before they play a road double of Nelson and Canterbury in the final round of the regular season.

The Hawks will be happy to avoid their first losing streak of the season with today’s win, but will want to finish the regular season on a high note playing Taranaki and Otago before they prepare for the playoffs.

MANAWATU JETS END THE IMS PAYROLL HAWKS STREAK

MANAWATU JETS END THE IMS PAYROLL HAWKS STREAK

The Breakers Manawatu Jets have ended the IMS Payroll Hawks eight game winning streak with a 88-84 win.

Small forward, Paul Jones starred for the Jets with a game high 29 points, scoring 12 in the final quarter to help his side hold off a Hawks furious finish.

The Bay trailed by 11 with under four minutes to go, but were able to close to within three and had an opportunity to tie the ball game with 20 seconds remaining.

The Hawks wound down the clock, but instead of going for a three, Paora Winitana missed a driving two pointer which then lead to a foul on Jones with seconds left.

Jones slotted the first to make it a four point game and then missed the second to prevent the Hawks from getting a decent shot up.

Nick Horvath grabbed his sixth straight double-double for the season of 13 points and 15 rebounds, point guard Brandon Jenkins had 13 and off the bench, Alonzo Burton scored 11 against his former side.

The Jets are now 5-9, and will be disappointed they did not have a great start to the season, as they have proven that they have playoff potential with wins against the top sides in recent weeks.

Everard Bartlett added 20 for the Hawks and Dustin Scott had 18 points and nine rebounds, despite being in foul trouble which limited his game time to 25 minutes.

The Hawks are at 12 wins and three losses, but they now have a chance to clinch the regular season tomorrow when they host the Zerofees Sharks who lost to the James Blond Supercity Rangers 97-94

Jason Cadee scored 26, Duane Bailey had 17, and Tohi Smith-Milner continued his hot form with 22 points, including 10 in the final quarter.

Dillon Boucher was extremely close to a triple double, tallying 10 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists for the Rangers, who had to hold off the Sharks, who closed to within one point with 46 seconds after Kevin Braswell and Luke Martin hit back to back three’s.

Cadee would knock down two free throws in the next possession, but the Sharks got a score off Brian Conklin and forced a Rangers turnover, setting up a nail biter finish.

Sharks were unable to get a score, and would be forced to foul Cadee, who made two more free throws.

Braswell would have a chance to put the game to an extra period, but it was no good as the Sharks drop to 9-5 and could drop to third if they lose tomorrow to the Hawks.

Braswell had a game high 36 points albeit on 35 shots, Brian Conklin added 24, and Luke Martin chipped in with 17.

Tai Wesley was the only other Shark to reach double digits with 10, but fouled out in 13 minutes.

The Rangers move to 7-9, but at this point would really need results to go their way if they have a chance of the playoffs, especially after 108-79 win the Fico Finance Giants had over the OceanaGold Nuggets.

After struggling in the past two losses, it was only a matter of time before Josh Pace would blow up for a big one and tonight it was at the expense of the Nuggets, tallying 30 points and ten rebounds in what will probably be a player of the week performance.

Jamal Boykin had 23 points, Phill Jones hit 5/8 three’s for 17 points, and Mika Vukona had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Giants, who move ahead of the Pistons to fourth with a 9-7 record.

It was going to be an extremely difficult task for the Nuggets who were missing starters Brendon Polyblank (Broken Nose) and Micah Lepaio (Ankle).

Nelson would start off strong leading 36-16 after the opening period, and would extend their lead to as many as 32.

Warren Carter had 29 points and Brandon Bowdry had 24, but shot 7/21.

Mark Dickel again played forty minutes, and had a stat line of 14 points, ten rebounds and six assists for the Nuggets, who drop to 7-8.

Tomorrow the Advice First Pistons (8-6) will try to move back up to the top four when they host the Canterbury Rams (3-11).

LEADING HAWKS SECURE SPOT IN NBL’S FINAL FOUR

LEADING HAWKS SECURE SPOT IN NBL’S FINAL FOUR

IMS Payroll Hawks have booked their place in the National Basketball League’s Final Four, defeating the Super City Rangers 105-90 on Saturday night.

Everard Bartlett had an all-round game with 20 points, 10 assists and six rebounds as the Hawks made their run in the third quarter, outscoring the Rangers 32-14.

The visitors led by as many as 22 in the fourth quarter, but the Rangers high-scoring offence managed to whittle the deficit down to seven with 3:41 left.

But the Rangers were outscored 10-2 from there, with the Tab Baldwin-coached Hawks now at 12-2, closing in on their franchise-best regular season record of 13-3 in 2012.

Kareem Johnson was his efficient self with 24 points on 10/14 shooting, and fellow American Dustin Scott notched up his seventh double-double for the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

It was going to be a tough ask for the Rangers, who earlier in the week had allowed former Breaker Darryl Corletto to return to Australia.

Jason Cadee had a game-high 25, Duane Bailey added 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Tohi Milner-Smith scored 18.

The Rangers slim playoff hopes look very distant, most likely needing to win the remainder of their games and hope other results go in their favour.
