From One Hawks Nest To Another, Australian Forward Dan Grida Joins the Big Barrel Hawks

The Big Barrel Hawks are excited to announce the signing of Australian forward Daniel Grida for the 2025 Sal’s National Basketball League (NBL) season. Grida is an athletic, versatile and determined forward who brings a wealth of experience from his time in the Australian NBL with the Illawarra Hawks and as part of the Australian Boomers setup.

The 197cm forward has overcome significant adversity throughout his career, including two ACL injuries, to return stronger than ever. During his time with the Illawarra Hawks, Grida has demonstrated resilience and grit, earning the respect of teammates and coaches alike. His leadership and relentless style of play, leaving everything on the floor will be inspiring for his team mates and will quickly make him a fan favourite.

Big Barrel Hawks General Manager Jarrod Kenny shared his excitement about the signing. “Dan is an incredible addition to our roster. His journey speaks volumes about his character, and his on-court abilities will undoubtedly elevate our team. He is a perfect example for our younger players of what a professional basketballer is all about.  We’re thrilled to welcome him to the Hawke’s Bay whanau and are confident he’ll be a fan favorite this season.”

Head Coach Sam Gruggen, who has worked closely with Grida during their time together at Illawarra, added:
“Having coached Dan before, I know firsthand the energy and passion he brings to every game. He’s a true competitor who plays with heart and determination, and I’m excited to see him contribute to the culture we’re building here in Hawke’s Bay.”

Grida, eager to take on this new challenge, expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Big Barrel Hawks.“I’m really looking forward to this next chapter of my career with the Hawks. The team has a great reputation, and I’m excited to be part of the journey. I can’t wait to connect with the fans, give my all on the court, and help the team get wins this season.”

Grida will arrive in Hawke’s Bay with fellow Illawarra team mate Luca Yates, following the conclusion of the Illawarra Hawks’ Final Series in the Australian NBL, where he has been a key contributor to a championship-contending team.
