Hometown Talent Jackson Ball Returns to the Hawke’s Bay Hawks for NBL 2025

The Hawke’s Bay Hawks are thrilled to announce the re-signing of Jackson Ball for the 2025 Sal’s National Basketball League (NBL) season. A product of Napier Boys’ High School and the Hawks system, Ball continues to exemplify the region’s rich basketball talent and is set to play a key role for the Hawks in NBL 2025.

Hawks General Manager Jarrod Kenny expressed his enthusiasm for Ball’s return. “Jackson’s dedication, both on and off the court, embodies the Hawks culture. We are excited to see him continue his development with the Hawks and play a big part in our success this season.”

Born on March 10, 2008, the 16-year-old guard has already made significant strides in his basketball career. Standing at 6’4″, Ball represented New Zealand at the 2024 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup, helping the team secure an outstanding fourth-place finish. He then played a pivotal role in Napier Boys’ High School’s impressive 2024 campaign, leading the team to a runner-up finish at Nationals and earning a spot in the New Zealand Secondary Schools All-Star Five.

Ball’s recent performances have marked him as one of the country’s promising young athletes. Adding to his growing list of achievements, Ball has been selected for the New Zealand Tall Blacks squad for the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers. Once he takes the court during the qualifiers, Ball would become the third youngest player to debut for the Tall Blacks, following Tai Wynyard and Izayah Le’afa, who also debuted at 16. The Tall Blacks are scheduled to face Hong Kong on February 20, 2025, followed by a game against the Philippines on February 23, 2025.

Head Coach Sam Gruggen highlighted Ball’s potential. “Having observed Jackson’s development  last season, it’s clear he possesses the talent and drive to make a significant impact. His international experience and leadership qualities will be invaluable to our squad.”

In addition to his athletic achievements, Ball continues to demonstrate leadership off the court. He was recently appointed Deputy Head Boy at Napier Boys’ High School, reflecting his commitment to excellence in all areas of life.

Ball shared his excitement about rejoining the Hawks: “It’s an honor to continue representing Hawke’s Bay at the NBL level. Balancing my responsibilities at school and my commitment to the Hawks and Tall Blacks is a challenge I’m ready to embrace.”

With 11 home games scheduled at Rodney Green Arenas, fans will have ample opportunities to witness Ball and the Hawks in action during the 2025 season. Season memberships are on sale now, and tickets for individual games will be available soon.
